Cyclist Nelson Binch, 41, was killed in a car-bike collision on December 1, 2008; he died at the scene. Nelson was riding on the 7400 block of North Tryon Street near the 29/49 fork. The police did not release information on whether the 22 year-old Lexus driver was charged. The accident occurred at 2pm in the daylight; the road was dry. A bike lane is proposed for this section of North Tryon in the long term bicycle route network of the Charlotte Bicycle Master Plan adopted by City Council in September 2008.
Years ago Nelson managed Spokes & Pedals Bicycle Shop in Kannapolis. After that he worked as a bike mechanic at International Bicycle on Independence Blvd (remember that place?). Nelson's website shows 15 bikes (his and hers) most with commuter racks; even the cruiser has a rack. I would consider Nelson an expert cyclist.
Nelson contributed to many cycling forums like trianglecycling.com, cyclingforums.com and dirtsplash.com and had many interests outside of cycling.
My best thoughts are with his wife Sandy and the rest of his family.
